Is Life Complicated?
by Tony Larkins
There are seven colours in a rainbow, seven natural musical notes and just twenty-six letters in the alphabet. From such a small collection of building blocks come works of art that have shaped the world.
Life is much the same, made up of simple moments and simple choices. Yet over time, those choices accumulate and can become complex. The late author Douglas Adams suggested that the answer to 'life, the universe and everything' was simply 42. Knowing the answer, however, does not necessarily make life any easier. The real challenge has always been knowing which choices to make along the way. Financial planning is alike. The principles themselves are surprisingly straightforward, yet applying those principles over time where circumstances change requires far more than simply understanding the basics.
Why Expertise Makes the Difference
A child can learn to play a few notes on a recorder or paint a simple picture. But experience, knowledge and dedication to your craft take things to a different level. That is why I have always found it surprising when some advisers describe themselves as financial planners, yet choose to work only to the minimum qualification standards. Financial planning is a profession that continually evolves, and the best advisers are those who are committed to continually developing their knowledge and expertise.
When Pope Julius II wanted the Sistine Chapel transformed, he did not ask the nearest decorator. He commissioned Michelangelo. The same principle applies when choosing professional advice. Every profession has minimum standards, but there is a world of difference between meeting the minimum and striving for excellence. That’s why designations like Chartered or Certified matter. They demonstrate an ongoing commitment to higher standards of knowledge, ethics and professional development, not because clients expect them, but because true professionals believe in continuous improvement. And contrary to some assumption, greater expertise does not necessarily mean greater cost. In fact, it can often prove to be far more valuable in the long run.
I was recently reminded of this when a long-standing client sadly passed away, leaving an estate worth more than £2 million. Thanks to years of careful planning, their family faced no Inheritance Tax liability. That outcome was not the result of luck or a last-minute decision. It came from making informed choices over time supported by a clear plan.
Bringing Clarity to Complexity
As we move through life, our relationship with money changes. Most of us spend decades learning how to budget and build wealth. Then, almost overnight, retirement asks us to think differently – to spend with confidence, support the next generation and enjoy the wealth we have worked so hard to create. Changing a mindset developed over a lifetime is rarely easy.
Life will probably always be complicated, we cannot remove every uncertainty. However, with the right guidance, we can simplify many of the financial decisions that accompany those changes, bringing greater clarity, confidence and peace of mind.
